Troubleshooting a MPE system in Southern Ontario

Overview

Screen Shot 2015-08-17 at 7.05.00 PMVertex Environmental Inc. specializes in the design, implementation and optimization of remedial systems including multi-phase extraction (MPE) systems. Vertex was contracted by an environmental consulting firm to trouble-shoot, optimize and operate a MPE system in southern Ontario for the containment and extraction of chlorinated ethene impacted groundwater. The system was installed in a silty sand geologic medium underneath and downgradient of a dry cleaner. Vertex provided the consultant with expert opinions on the design, operation parameters and settings for the system as well as provided day to day maintenance for the system. The system was designed to handle a high flow of vapour and a minimal flow of water. The treatment system consisted of an air stripper, particulate filter and activated carbon for both air and water.

Scope of Work

Compounds treated using the MPE system included:

  • Chlorinated ethenes
    • PCE
    • TCE
    • cis-1,2 DCE
    • vinyl chloride
  • Petroleum hydrocarbons

The Vertex Approach

Screen Shot 2015-08-17 at 7.04.54 PMThe keys to the successful application of a MPE system is choosing the right combination of pumps and vacuums along with proper infrastructure to minimize leaks. Vertex was able to increase the systems operational time by a factor greater than 3 while increasing its area of influence and treatment efficiency.

Vertex combines strong theorical understanding with practical experience to properly plan and implement the right remedial program for your site. Selecting Vertex to undertake your remediation project allows you to access a wealth of experience and knowledge.
