MTBE in Alberta

Overview

Vertex Environmental Inc. staff have designed, constructed and operated a variety of systems to treat the fuel additive methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE). MTBE is an oxygenate which was added to gasoline in the 1990s to replace lead as an octane enhancer. MTBE is often associated with gasoline releases and is persistent in the subsurface. At a former gasoline dispensing facility in southern Alberta, Vertex conducted a in-situ chemical oxidation program to treat MTBE within a groundwater plume.

    • MTBE
    • BTEX
    • Petroleum Hydrocarbons F1 to F2
  • Geology – Fill and silty sand
  • Oxidant
    • RegenOx

The Vertex Approach

Vertex combines strong theorical understanding with practical experience to properly plan and implement the right remedial program for your site. Selecting Vertex to undertake your remediation project allows you to access a wealth of experience and knowledge.

Outcome

The results of the in situ chemical oxidation program indicated that the MTBE could be effectively treated using the chemical oxidant RegenOx . Monitoring over the long term as well as at down gradient monitoring wells indicated no rebound reactions were occurring nor were any by-products of concern generated by the chemical oxidation process.
