Overview
Multi-Phase Extraction (MPE) technologies use a vacuum to remove various combinations of impacted groundwater, free phase and vapours from the subsurface. Once above surface, the extracted liquids and vapours are separated and treated. The treated vapours are discharged to the environment and the treated liquids are discharged to either the ground surface, a sewer, or they are collected for off-site disposal. Vertex has installed and designed numerous MPE systems in various geologic media.

- BTEX and petroleum hydrocarbons
- Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
- Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)
- Phenols
- Phthalates
Experience
A proper MPE system needs to succeed in a number of areas including system design, cost-effective operation and maintenance, and intelligent optimization. Vertex has completed numerous MPE pilot-tests, MPE designs, and third-party technical reviews of existing MPE systems. Vertex is always exploring the use of innovative ways to optimize MPE systems including the development of smart well installation methods, run-time monitoring and product recovery optimization. Vertex has several mobile Certificates of Approval that allow for the installation and start-up of MPE systems within two to three weeks in many cases.
