What is the Vertex Approach To Remedial Design?
Any solution begins with making sure you fully understand the problem.
Contaminated sites are typically complex problems. Sound solutions then, must start with acquiring a deep understanding of the issues.
We start by asking the basics: how much contamination is present in soil and groundwater? What specific types of contaminants and ranges of concentrations exist? How deep are the impacts? Are there structures or utilities in the way? If so, of what materials are they constructed? What is the soil type and underlying geology? Which way is groundwater moving, and how fast?

We also have very specialized high resolution characterization tools to assist in rapidly collecting data in the field, if needed, to refine the picture or “conceptual site model”.
Often, another component of our design work is to perform in house bench scale testing on soil or groundwater samples collected from the site, in order to assess assumptions.
With a good conceptual site model in hand, we then review the available treatment options, including a cost-benefit analysis.
Detailed design involves either:
(i) calculating dosing of treatment additives, and planning how the additives will be efficiently applied to contaminated soil and groundwater
OR
(ii) determining how best to physically separate the contamination from soil, groundwater, and air vapours.
