In-Situ Injections Revitalize Historic Site

Overview

Historical leaks from a series of underground tanks and pipes were indentified at a former fuel dispensing facility in Toronto. The leakage had created an underground plume over an area of approximately 1,000m2. Excavation was deemed to be technically challenging and cost prohibitive, involving compounds of concern such as:

  • BTEX
  • F1 to F4 PHCs

Extensive experience and strong theoretical knowledge made Vertex Environmental the ideal choice for this situation. The team was asked to design and optimize a cost-effective yet highly efficient in-situ remediation program. They implemented a chemical oxidation process involving multiple injections of RegenOx, administered by direct push injection.

The Vertex Approach

Screen Shot 2015-08-31 at 4.59.54 PMThe Vertex team delivered over 250,000L of RegenOx oxidant solution across the site. Tracer and geochemical testing confirmed that over 90% of the area was remediated to residential standards, without the use of surface infrastructure. Remedial objectives were met with no ongoing operation or maintenance costs.

Outcome

A Record of Site Condition was obtained, allowing residential land development to proceed.
