What Makes Trap & Treat® Special?

Introducing Trap & Treat Technology

Last month we deployed our own custom–built slurry injection trailer for Trap & Treat® injections to a Site in south-western Ontario. Trap & Treat® is a technology developed in Golden Colorado to address a common limitation of in situ technologies – the need for repeat applications.

This advanced technology has been successfully applied at over 150 sites in the US and Europe during the last 10 years. Remedial objectives have been achieved at the majority of the sites, with typically only a single application.

Vertex joined the RPI Group (the technology originators) by becoming the first and only approved installers in Canada for the Trap & Treat® products.

The “trap” component of the technology makes use of activated carbon, a material with a long history as a filtration media in waste processing applications. Specially formulated activated carbon, impregnated with additives, is prepared in slurry form then injected into the subsurface. The activated carbon first adsorbs or “traps” groundwater contamination. Immediate declines in groundwater contaminant concentrations follow. The additives in turn degrade or “treat” the groundwater contaminants within it’s pore.

There are formulations for treating both chlorinated solvent plumes and petroleum hydrocarbon plumes.

1) BOS-100® is used in the remediation of chlorinated solvents. It consists of activated carbon impregnated with elemental iron where the carbon “traps” and holds the contaminants while the iron “treats” the chlorinated solvents via reductive dechlorination.

2) BOS-200®  is used in the remediation of petroleum hydrocarbons. It consists of activated carbon, nutrients, and a facultative bacteria blend,  where the carbon “traps” and holds the contaminants while biological processes “treat” the petroleum hydrocarbons.

In March, our newly built Trap & Treat®  system was used to inject a total of 570 kg of BOS-100®. The material was formulated into a slurry and injected into temporary injection points to trap and treat groundwater PCE and daughter-breakdown products at a Site in south-western Ontario.
